Long COVID Project
Hospitals and Health Care
HE Project aiming to understand the mechanisms behind the long-term effects of a COVID-19 infection.
About us
Long COVID is a 48-month Horizon Europe project aiming to understand the mechanisms of host-virus response behind the long-term symptoms following COVID-19 infection. The number of patients suffering from long-term effects of a COVID-19 infection are growing worldwide. Based on different statistics, 1 in 10 patients is developing Long Covid Syndrome (LCS). Currently, there is no validated information on the underlying mechanism for LCS and validated therapeutic interventions are not available. It is therefore important to identify and understand the mechanisms behind the continuing symptoms and to use this improved understanding to provide adequate treatment to patients. This is what the Long COVID project aims to do. The project, coordinated by HUS Helsinki University Hospital (Finland) and including 12 partners from 6 countries (Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Estonia and Switzerland), will study the pathogenesis of LCS by: - conducting geographically diverse cohort and registry studies; - conducting mechanistic studies; - using novel high-throughput methods for biomarker analysis; - conducting interventional and follow-up studies on LCS patients. 🌟 Happy Europe Day 2024! 🌟 Today marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration in 1950, a pivotal moment that laid the groundwork for the European Union as we know it. As we celebrate our shared values of unity, diversity and solidarity, let's also recognise the resilience of our European community in the face of challenges. We demonstrated this shared resilience not only during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are also working together to address the ongoing challenges of the pandemic and the long COVID. On Europe Day 2024, we want to raise awareness of the progress we have made together in tackling long COVID and highlight the research and knowledge that is still needed. Let's keep the momentum going to tackle the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic!

On Tuesday, once again, experts and those affected gathered together for the 3rd Long Covid Roundtable in Berlin to discuss the latest research and treatment options. The German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said: "Germany is currently at a turning point with Long COVID." He announced that research funding programmes totalling 150 million euros are now underway. Goals have been set for improved networking between experts, better care and support for children and young people, and more. "We will not abandon the victims of LongCovid!" To all the German speakers: More information in the video 👇
„Deutschland steht derzeit an einem Wendepunkt bei Long COVID“, sagte Bundesgesundheitsminister Prof. Karl Lauterbach am Dienstag im Anschluss an den 3. Runden Tisch Long COVID in Berlin. Erneut tauschten sich Expertinnen und Experten mit Betroffenen zur aktuellen Forschung und Behandlungsmöglichkeiten aus. Durch eine stärkere Vernetzung von Expertinnen und Experten, mehr Fördermittel und die Behandlung mit bereits für andere Indikationen zugelassenen Medikamenten schaffe man eine deutliche Verbesserung der Versorgung von Long-COVID-Betroffenen, so Lauterbach. 📚 Don’t miss the remarkable letter, which recently has been published in the Nature Immunology Journal by Liew et. al. ❓About 1 in 10 people infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) experience prolonged symptoms known as long COVID. However, the different types of the disease and their underlying mechanisms are not fully understood yet. The researchers profiled 368 plasma proteins in 657 individuals who had been hospitalised for at least 3 months. Among them, 426 had ongoing long COVID symptoms while 233 had fully recovered. „Our study aimed to understand inflammatory processes that underlie long COVID and was not designed for biomarker discovery. Our findings suggest that specific inflammatory pathways related to tissue damage are implicated in subtypes of long COVID, which might be targeted in future therapeutic trials.“ (Liew et al., 2024)

📚 Don’t miss the insightful research article published in the Nature Communications Journal by Rob Wüst. In a longitudinal case-control study (NCT05225688), Wüst and colleagues gained new insights into the pathophysiology of post-exertional malaise in people with long COVID. In this study, the researchers examined 23 patients with long COVID and 21 people from the control group. In addition to several examinations and blood tests, they took muscle biopsies at different time points to measure skeletal muscle abnormalities. Gain more insights into this research article and read the full article. 👇 https://lnkd.in/esRy-jRa
