Association of SARS-CoV-2 infection and persistence with long COVID

This new article published by The Lancet presents an overview of findings showing that there might be a correlation between the length of time the SARS-CoV-2 virus stays in the body and the risk of Long COVID. Therefore, rapid viral elimination in patients with persistent SARS-CoV-2 virus could be crucial.

The authors present possible pathogenic mechanisms of persistent virus that might lead to chronic inflammation, immune dysfunction, microvascular endothelial damage, and microthrombosis seen in long COVID.

Furthermore, this publication includes a series of recommendations and future directions for a more effective response to long COVID.
