T cell–dependent IFN-y release in Long Covid patients

Read the interesting research article resently published in the Science Advances Journal from Benjamin A. Krishna.

Following initial infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), some individuals continue to suffer from symptoms for more than 12 weeks, a condition known as Long Covid. There’s an urgent need to comprehend the underlying mechanisms of this chronic illness and to pinpoint biomarkers that can aid in diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring.

In this study the researchers performed highly sensitive FluoroSpot assays to measure interferon-γ (IFN-γ) levels from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with Long Covid.

„Our study highlights a potential mechanism underlying Long Covid, enabling the search for biomarkers and therapeutics in patients with Long Covid.“ (Benjamin A. Krishna et al., 2024)
